The “National Eye Donation Day” celebration was held on 18th December, 2024 at the Sri Lanka Eye Donation Society headquarters, and the Honourable Deputy Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr.Hansaka Wijemuni participated in the event as the chief guest. His Eminence Archbishop of Colombo Malcom Cardinal Ranjith, a representative of the Pakistan High Commission of Sri Lanka, Director of the Epidemiology Unit Dr. Mrs. Paba Palihawadana, Deputy Director of the National Eye Hospital Dr.Jayaruwan Bandara, Chief Consultant JMO of the Institute of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology Dr.Sriyantha Amararatne and Media Director & Spokesman of the Ministry of Public Security Colonel M.B.B.Nalin Herath also participated as special guests.
Ceremonial awards were presented by the Honourable Deputy Minister to the Deputy Chief Senior Driver, Mr.H.D.Jagath Priyashantha for completing 25 years of continuous service to the Eye Donation Society.
In addition, Rs.100,000.00 was donated to the blind student of Kalutara Gurulugomi Maha Vidyalaya Ranara Ranatunge, who had achieved excellent results in the G.C.E. Ordinary Level examination in 2023. Everyone enjoyed her instant poetry, as she is a poet.
A box of corneas was presented to the representative of the Pakistan High Commission of Sri Lanka to symbolize the Society’s service for foreign patients.
Some equipment for the use of the Institute of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology was also handed over to the Chief Consultant JMO Dr.Sriyantha Amararatne. The Dr.Hudson Silva memorial oration was presented by the lecturer M.G.Nandalal Premaratne, Hon. Secretary of the BOT. Honorary Membership of the Society was awarded to the famous actress Mrs.Suvineetha Weerasinghe.
The M.O.U. for donating IOLs National Eye Hospital to be distributed among the low-income patients who are coming to get cataract surgery done at the National Eye Hospital was also signed.
