Sri Lanka Eye Donation Society operates and maintains a wide network of services at district level in an island wide, with a view to giving eyesight to thousands of visually handicapped patients inland and overseas. Majority of these branches do a great service for our parent Society. Among other things which involves to enlist of members who are willing to donate their eyes and entire bodies.

In addition to above, free eye checkups, donation of spectacles and giving necessary medical advices for under privilege and poor families from various parts of the country with help of Eye Donation branches. Most of these programs are being done in collaboration with Ministry of Health, Armed Forces, Manusath Derana, etc.

Moreover conduct of an awareness programs to educate many groups of people as possible on the great deed of donating eyes and bodies will assume SLEDS as an important place. In addition, various merits which include “Pinkama’s” taking place in memory of Dr.Hudson Silva and his Lady along with the monetary contributions coming from many more members are a remarkable feature. Some other noteworthy meritorious events that takes place include the provision of the respective contact lenses to members whose eyes have been developed through a cataract operation from the expense of their branch, further distributing school books to school children within the provision free of charge and as well as free distribution of wheel chairs and crutches to disabled persons and release of cattle consigned to death.

Furthermore, an important task is the conduct of awareness programs which educates the participants elaborately with video visuals. Therefore by taking part in the workshops on the donation of eyes and tissues organized by various associations and societies, and as well as government and private sector institutions, particularly at the school level of Sri Lanka.

One of the other important tasks undertaken by this Division is pledging forms for the donation of eyes and bodies available to people. For the purpose of getting a special message (for a good deed…such as wishing long life to a living individual, invoking merit on a deceased person, appreciating a society or institution in case they bear expenses, making birthday greetings etc.) form has been included and printed that the fee is levied and you can get the form printed upon payment of such fee to the Accounts Division.

Another special task that merits mentioning is the magazine, “Akshidana Puwath” published by the SLEDS twice a year for the benefit of families whose members have donated their eyes and tissues and also for the benefit of the branches of the Society in operation and the entire membership. This is a magazine to mirror services rendered by the Society and its branch network and particulars about the eye and tissue donors registered at the SLEDS during the period concerned.

This Division handles the organization and coordination work of the meritorious festivities including annual lighting up ceremony “Pahan Pooja” conducted by the SLEDS with the intension of invoking and offering merit to thousands of devoted donors who gave away their eyes and tissues and to our Society’s founder Deshabandu Dr. Hudson Silva and his lady in particular. The sheer commitment demonstrated by all members of the staff of the SLEDS right throughout these activities is remarkable and deserves continuous appreciation. Participation in the activities and contribution made within their limitations by many members of the branches and its office bearers is also very valuable.

It is worthwhile mentioning herein the commemoration of the “National Eye Donation Day” that has been made effective by the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka to coincide with every 18th of December, the birthday of the founder of SLEDS, Dr. Hudson Silva. This Division is instrumental in the implementation of various programmes educating people of all localities through the branch network of the SLEDS across the island and in giving necessary instructions and providing the services of the Society in its right spirit.

In reminiscence of the periods of time that have been passed, we are fortunate to march along and an advancing ahead for a victorious overcome of great challenges in an imminent.
