Dr.Hudson Silva Eye Hospital

The eye hospital founded by Dr. Hudson Silva in 1992 was named in his honour as Dr. Hudson Silva Eye Hospital after his death.

When Dr. Hudson Silva started the Eye Hospital surgeries were performed by eye surgeons from India and Pakistan. Late Dr.Akira Momose from Japan also performed surgeries. He helped to fully equip the operating theatre.

Local eye surgeons also came and did surgeries. Surgical eye camps were conducted by the foreign surgeons annually. This was done free of charge to the patients. Currently we have done more than 10,000 surgeries free of charge to needy patients.

The prime ambition of the great founder of this eye hospital following its commissioning was to provide an opportunity for making eye care available to Sri Lankan eye patients at an affordable price. Even today, our eye hospital with a history of service over 20 years continues to carry out its eye care mission allowing needy eye patients to receive treatment at a price affordable to them in keeping with the ambitious wish of its founder. The Dr. Hudson Silva Eye Hospital is equipped with state of the art equipment at the outpatient department. We also have a fully-fledged operation theatre with provision for eye care of thousands of needy patients. Our charges for cataract surgery is very low compared to other fee levying units.

We are very proud to note that it was in the very same operation theatre of our eye hospital where a Consultant Specialist Eye Surgeon performed cataract surgeries on 291 eye patients in a day in year 2009 setting a world record.

We also do outreach Eye Camps at rural areas. If specialized treatment is needed we refer to the Dr. Hudson Silva Eye Hospital.
